Solariums to be Banned

Solariums to be Banned in NSW by 2014

Im not sure if I was alone in thinking this, however I was actually surprised to read in the headlines, that Solariums will be ‘banned’ in NSW by 2014.

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few years or overseas where the solarium culture is still going strong, most of us Aussies have well an truly been exposed to the facts from the cancer council & government about solarium use, but did you know the real facts on light-exposure in a solarium?

“Tanning beds are categorised as a grade one carcinogen by the International Agency for Research in Cancer, they go onto to say “We know that solarium use by people aged under 35 increases their risk of developing melanoma by 98 per cent.”

WOW…98% increased risk if your under the age of 35, now that is scary!

Although I’m completely aware of the danger of tanning in sun-beds now, I have done the odd session while in my late teen years (and really hope im never in that 98% category above).  I would never jump ship again!  For me, spray tan and fake tan have come along way from its humble beginnings, so much so, I’ve built an entire livelihood around the spray tan. Needless to say a complete ban on solariums will be nothing short of helpful in the world of spray tanning.

What will these business become? It doesn’t have to be business over, the smart ones should covert their solarium beds to LED beds, where they can now help their clients reverse some of the damage that has been done, and incorporating the Spray-tan system in to cater for safe-tanning.

And for all those fake tan haters still out there, c’mon give the spray-tan industry another go, things are getting better and better by the day in our world, the small annoyances of “not showering for a couple of hours” or the sweet tan fragrance as it reacts with the protein in your epidermis, or the slight uneven wear off after the 6-7 day mark (avoidable if you scrub & exfoliate by the way), are in my opinion all very tolerable, if in contrast it means youthful, glowing, undamaged healthy skin – and takes you out of the 98% risk category for melanoma.
